At the Allergy & Asthma Center of Lake Norman, we perform allergy skin testing for allergies to dust mites, cats, dogs, feathers,
horses and the most prevalent trees, molds, weeds, brush and grasses in the area. During your in-office allergy skin test, we are able to determine the allergies you have and the severity of those allergies. We will discuss your treatment options at the conclusion of your test.
Patient Instructions for Skin Testing:
1 – Schedule an appointment.
2 - Four (4) days or 96 hours before your testing appointment is scheduled, please stop taking the following medications:

- Antihistamines (such as Allegra, Benadryl, Claritin, Clarinex, Xyzal and Zyrtec).
- Decongestant / antihistamine combination medications.
- Any over-the-counter allergy medicines, cold & cough remedies.
- Any over-the-counter sleep aids, which usually contain a sedating antihistamine.
- Nasal antihistamine sprays such as Astelin, Astepro and Patanase must be stopped two days (48 hours) prior to your appointment.
- Please inform us if you are on beta blocking medications.
- Please inform us if you are taking antidepressants such as Norpramin, Seroquel, Sinequan, Surmontil, Remeron and Vivactil. These can block skin testing but should not be stopped before your appointment without authorization from your prescribing physician.
PLEASE NOTE
You should continue to take as prescribed the following medications:
- Antibiotics.
- All asthma medications.
- Prescription nasal sprays (like Flonase, Nasonex, Nasacort, Omnaris, etc.), with the exception of Astelin, Astepro and Patanase which are antihistamines (as noted above).
- Decongestants that are not combined with an antihistamine.
- Other medications such as those for blood pressure, diabetes, etc.
